Nestled in the heart of Brisbane’s leafy Graceville, Regal Graceville has been captivating audiences since 1922. Originally opened as the Graceville Picture Gardens, this open-air theatre evolved into an indoor cinema in the 1930s, offering a slice of Hollywood glamour to the local community. In 1953, it was renamed the Regal Theatre to coincide with Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, cementing its place in Brisbane’s cinematic history.
For decades, the Regal Twin Cinemas was lovingly operated by the Roobottom family, maintaining its legacy as a local favourite. Under their stewardship, the cinema became a place where generations of Brisbane families shared unforgettable movie experiences.
In 2019, Regal Graceville entered a new chapter when it was acquired by the Sourris family. Their family has been instrumental in shaping Brisbane’s cinematic landscape for three generations, beginning with the Yatala Drive-In, built in 1974 by their grandfather, Peter Sourris. This first venture marked the start of a legacy that would grow to include some of the city’s most iconic theatres.
